UNIVERSITY SYSTEM

Each Turkish University sets its own admission criteria and decides which applicants meet those criteria. Therefore applications by degree-seeking international students to an undergraduate program must be made directly to the Student Affairs Office of the respective university.

UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

In 2010, YOK (Higher Education Institute) announced new arrangements for Foreign Student Examination called YOS and foreign students studying at universities in Turkey.

According to these new regulations starting from 2011, the YOS exam will no longer be centrally made by OSYM. Instead, universities will set their own criteria about admissions of international students and organize Examinations for Foreign Students (YOS) in their own terms. Therefore, prospective students should apply separately to each university

  • International Student Application Form ( mostly online)
  • Copy of High School Diploma (if in another language rather than Turkish or English, notarized translation should also be submitted)
  • The copy of the exam result accepted by the University
  • Official transcript, showing all courses and grades taken in the entire high school education, signed and stamped by the high school authority.
  • Language Proficiency Score (The required score from language exams will still depend on the school to which applicant applies. Students who are not able to take one of the international language tests (TOEFL, PTE etc.) may take the university’s proficiency test upon arrival. Those who fail the proficiency test must take the Language program of the university before beginning the academic study. For further information on application procedures please contact the Admissions Office of the respective university.
  • Application fee
  • Essay (Write a short essay explaining why you want to attend this school, what course of study you want to pursue, and your career goals)
  • If available, 1 academic letter of recommendation
  • YOS Exam Result

GRADUATE ADMISSIONS

Graduate-level programs are coordinated directly by the institutes themselves. A postgraduate qualification or master’s degree typically takes two years to complete, although this can vary depending on the institution. As a minimum you should be able to provide evidence of existing undergraduate qualifications in a relevant subject area. Recognition of degrees will usually be a simple process, particularly if you have previously studied in Europe. If your qualifications are less familiar you may need to contact your university in advance; their international office should be experienced in handling these enquiries.

In addition to requiring appropriate qualifications at the previous level of study, most applicants to Turkish universities are also required to sit an entrance exam. This applies to postgraduate programmes and to international applicants.

The test used within Turkey is the Entrance Examination for Academic Staff and Graduate Students (ALES). Many Masters programmes will require applicants to achieve a score of at least 50-55 on this test, with better results potentially increasing your chance of admission to more competitive places or of winning merit-based scholarships
